There are many different film festivals all over the worl, however Venice Film Festival is perhaps the oldest and was initially started in 1932. Every year the festival is held there, either in the latter half of August or in early September. You will find that it is held at Lido di Venezia Palazzo del Cinema which is very historic. It's certainly a grand and elegant affair and will certainly not disapoint.
The most prestigious award is called Leone d'Oro, which in English means Golden Lion. However a more recent award has been given out called the San Marco Award. The best film in controcorrente section will be given this award. In addition to the film festival taking place, you will also find that there is the Venice Biennale which is an amazing festival celebrating modern art.
There are many different sections to the festival with both short and official feature film competitions. You will also find that there are programs for best videos and new entrants. There are a number of prizes up for grabs for instance The Jury's Grand Prize, the Special Award (for best directors), The Golden Lion (for best film), Coppa Volpi Award (for best actor and actress), Marcello Mastroianni award (for best emerging actor or actress).
Over the years, all the top movie stars and members of the media have appeared at the festival however it is perhaps considered second to the Cannes Festival held in France. If you are planning a trip to Italy whilst the festival is being held, it might be worth the journey to check it out if you are a film buff.
